How to become a ”Teacher at Sea”

First launched in 1990 in USA by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) the program “Teachers at Sea” was introduced in Europe by EGU (European Geoscience Union).  

This program has taken a number of European school teachers on board research vessels to experience the making of real science in marine environment.

Since 2007 EGU has enrolled teachers in the cruises AMOCINT, PACHIDERME and CIRCEA on board  the “Marion Dufresne”, a research ship of the French Polar Institute (IPEV).

This year one teacher (me, Giulia Realdon from Italy) is sailing on the “G.O. Sars”, a ship of the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR), in a cruise named PREPARED.

PREPARED cruise is realized within EUROFLEETS-2 European program coordinated by Italian National Observatory of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS).

European “Teachers at Sea” are chosen through the participation in the EGU-GIFT (Geoscience Information For Teachers) workshops, held in Vienna every year in April.

The application for EGU-GIFT workshop can be sent in autumn (usually before December): the selected teachers receive a grant from EGU to cover travel/accommodation costs.

After GIFT workshops, participants accept to provide feed-back and to use this experience in their future teaching activities.

In addition to GIFT workshops, EGU Education section has launched other projects aimed at teachers and schools:

• GIFT Distinguished Lectures given by top scientists who have previously participated as speakers in GIFT workshops. European high school teachers and principals and educators for teachers can request a lecture and have it funded by EGU.
• Teacher’ corner, a database of resources for teaching across the geosciences. It includes also ideas and lesson plans from teachers who have attended GIFT workshops.
• I’m a Geoscientist (Get me out of here!), a game-show style competition for scientists, where school students get to ask questions to researchers and vote to decide who wins a prize.
• EGU Planet Press, a web-page of press releases for kids, parents and educators about the latest geo-scientific research going on across the world.

Questo programma ha permesso ad alcuni insegnanti europei di salire a bordo di una nave oceanografica e di partecipare ad una vera esperienza di ricerca scientifica in ambiente marino.

A partire dal 2007 EGU ha arruolato docenti nelle crociere AMOCINT, PACHIDERME e CIRCEA a bordo della “Marion Dufresne”, una nave da ricerca dell’Istituto Polare Francese (IPEV).

Quest’anno un’insegnante (io, Giulia Realdon dall’Italia) sta navigando sulla “G.O. Sars”, una nave dell’Istituto Norvegese di Ricerca Marina (IMR) in una crociera chiamata PREPARED.

La crociera PREPARED è realizzata nell’ambito del programma europeo EUROFLEETS-2, coordinato dall’Osservatorio Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS) di Trieste.

I “Teachers at Sea” europei sono scelti tramite la partecipazione ai workshop EGU-GIFT (Geoscience Information For Teachers), che si tengono annualmente a Vienna in aprile.

La candidatura per EGU-GIFT va presentata in autunno (di solito entro novembre): i docenti selezionati ricevono dall’EGU una borsa per i costi di viaggio e alloggio.

Dopo il workshop i partecipanti si impegnano a fornire un feed-back e a utilizzare l’esperienza GIFT nelle proprie attività didattiche.

Oltre ai workshop GIFT, la sezione Education di EGU ha lanciato altri progetti rivolti agli insegnanti ed alle scuole:

• GIFT Distinguished Lectures, conferenze tenute da famosi scienziati che hanno partecipato come oratori ai workshop GIFT. Possono essere richieste da docenti e dirigenti di scuole superiori e da formatori di insegnanti; i costi degli oratori sono coperti dall’EGU.
• Teacher’ corner, un database di risorse per insegnare le geoscienze. Include anche idee e moduli didattici proposti da insegnanti che hanno partecipato ai workshop GIFT:
• I’m a Geoscientist (Get me out of here!), a una competizione tra scienziati tipo game-show, in cui gli studenti possono fare domande ai ricercatori e votare per scegliere il vincitore.
• EGU Planet Press, una pagina web di comunicati stampa per ragazzi, genitori ed e educatori sugli ultimi sviluppi della ricerca geo-scientifica nel mondo.
