Back to Tromsø!

Our adventure is coming to an end.

After sailing until 78° 03’ North latitude, after taking a lot of measurements and samples and deploying some moorings on the seafloor (see previous post on “the mooring men”) we are finally returning to the harbor of Tromsø.

Sailing the calm waters of the fjord we recognize the surrounding landscape: the snow on the hills is partly disappeared, but the weather is much worse than the day we left.

Low lead-grey clouds cover the hilltops and cold rain alternates with snow.

All the research teams have already packed their equipment and the precious samples collected in the Arctic, included some very beautiful (in the eyes of specialists) sediment cores.  All the measured data are safely stored in the computers.

Samples and data will be the ground of several months’ work and articles that will be published around Europe and beyond.

The scientific adventure is just beginning.

So is for my teacher-at-sea experience, now to be shared within the teacher community.

La nostra avventura volge al termine.

Dopo aver navigato fino alla latitudine di 78° 03’ Nord, dopo aver raccolto una gran quantità di misure e di campioni, dopo aver posizionato alcuni mooring sul fondo del mare (date un’occhiata al post su “the mooring men”), stiamo infine tornando al porto di Tromsø.

Navigando nelle calme acque del fiordo riconosciamo il paesaggio circostante: la neve sulla cima delle colline è in parte scomparsa, ma il tempo è decisamente peggiorato rispetto al giorno in cui siamo partiti.

Basse nubi grigio piombo nascondono le cime delle colline e una pioggia fredda si alterna a nevischio.

Tutti i gruppi di ricercatori hanno impacchettato le loro attrezzature e i preziosi campioni raccolti nell’Artico, comprese alcune bellissime (agli occhi degli specialisti) carote di sedimenti. Tutti i dati misurati sono stati messi al sicuro nei computer.

Campioni e dati saranno il terreno per parecchi mesi di lavoro e per articoli che saranno pubblicati in Europa e oltre.

L’avventura scientifica è appena all’inizio.

E così è anche per la mia esperienza di “teacher at sea”, da condividere – da qui in avanti – con la comunità degli insegnanti.

E poi c’è ancora tanto da raccontare sulla crociera… perciò continuate a seguirmi, sono in arrivo nuovi post!

Leaving Tromsø

Getting ready for a research cruise is not a simple task, as I could see today.

Even if all the equipment had been already carried on board, it took some hours to start the cruise.

The appointment was at 8.30 at the pier: a couple of pictures as a souvenir and then all of us went on board, received badges and had cabins assigned.

The rest of the morning was spent in checking if all the necessary instruments and materials were on the ship and in attending a session on safety at sea given by the ship responsible.

By 14.20, after lunch and last checks completed, the G.O.Sars left the harbor and headed for the open sea.

Tromsø is located within a fjord area, so you have to spend some hours sailing among magnificent landscapes before you reach the Norwegian Sea.

The sky was clear and the temperature mild: not so common in this area, as a Norwegian meteorologist explained me while sailing.

Preparare il necessario per una crociera di ricerca non è affatto semplice.

Anche se tutte le attrezzature erano già state portate a bordo, ci sono volute diverse ore per poter partire.

L’appuntamento era alle 8.30 al molo: il tempo di fare qualche foto come souvenir e poi siamo saliti a bordo, dove abbiamo ricevuto  i badge a ci hanno assegnato le cabine.

Il resto della mattina è servito per controllare se tutti gli strumenti e i materiali erano a bordo e per un mini-corso sulla sicurezza a mare tenuto, dal responsabile della sicurezza.

Alle 14.20, dopo il pranzo e gli ultimi controlli, la G.O. Sars ha finalmente lasciato il porto diretta verso il mare aperto.

Tromsø è situata all’interno di una zona di fiordi, perciò ci vuole qualche ora per giungere al Mare di Norvegia dopo aver navigato in mezzo a un magnifico paesaggio.

Il cielo era limpido e la temperatura mite: situazione insolita in quest’area, come ha spiegato una meteorologa norvegese durante la navigazione.

Here we go. First stop at Tromsø

Finally the adventure begins. Today I flied from Italy to Norway, where I met the other cruise participants in Tromsø.

Tromsø is a medium-small town north of the Arctic Polar Circle. With about 70,000 inhabitants it has a university  (two of the cruise researchers work there) and a harbour, famous as starting point for  expeditions to the Arctic.

I had some time free, so I take the chance to have a look at the Polar Museum, with its exhibits on Polar explorerers and life in the Arctic, at the modern Arctic Cathedral and at the ancient wooden Cathedral.

Later I met the other cruise member for an informal meeting over a beer: a good kick-off for PREPARED Cruise.

Tromsø harbor

Finalmente inizia l’avventura. Oggi sono partita dall’Italia diretta in Norvegia, a TromMusø,

dove ho incontrato gli altri membri della spedizione.

Tromsø è una città medio-piccola situata a nord del Circolo Polare Artico. Con circa 70.000 abitanti, ha un’università (dove lavorano due dei ricercatori della crociera) e un porto, famoso come punto di partenza per le spedizioni nell’Artico.

Avevo un po’ di tempo libero, così ho approfittato per dare un’occhiata al Museo Polare, contenente exhibit sull’esplorazione polare e sulla vita nell’Artico, alla moderna Cattedrale dell’Artico e all’antica Cattedrale di legno.

Più tardi ho incontrato gli altri partecipanti alla crociera per un meeting informale intorno a una birra: un bel modo per iniziare la crociera PREPARED.
